As always, it is the quest for connections that motivates Burke – those elusive links between culture and society, between elites and the wider public, between cultural messages as originally transmitted and their subsequent social or psychological reception. His sense of timing was immaculate. Just as Burke was beginning to unwrap the wiles of the great iconographers of yesteryear, the Saatchi brothers were learning to unleash ever more sophisticated images of political leadership upon the British electorate.

And I write these lines, having just returned from New York, where I appeared on a panel to discuss ‘Why History Matters’, with two old friends who also appear in this volume: Eric Foner and Simon Schama.
