The places of the state are quite special, but the people make them memorable. From natives who decide to stay to others who come for a visit and never leave, the state is full of special people doing special things for tourists. Special thanks go to Cindy Harrington, travel media director with the state's tourism office, whose love of the state matches mine and who made my research trips productive and enjoyable. This book could not have been written without Cindy. Steve Shalutta and David Fatalleh, two of the state's fine photographers, helped me translate many of my wonderful West Virginia experiences onto film.
The lands purchased by the federal government for the forest had mostly been forested during the late 1800s and early 1900s and were often little more than bare hillsides. The early days of the Monongahela saw the reestablishment of a tree cover Page 24 through planting programs. The Civilian Conservation Corps was active in the 1930s, building stone and timber pavilions and many other structures that remain today.
