We did not intend that the writers would provide the definitive statement about the nature of the Beat movement but rather that they would use their autobiographical memories to present multiple narratives that would illuminate that historical moment. Nancy M. Grace - 45 Each interview is based on a set of questions that we constructed to elicit testimony about women writing in the Beat generation. When possible, we sent the questions to the writer in advance so she could prepare responses. Realizing that the conversational nature of the interview produces a certain amount of superficial (although at times valuable and interesting) material, we hoped to minimize this result by giving the writers sufficient time to develop more substantive responses.
