In contrast, one of the most persistent themes is the notion of making previously unknown connections. In the rest of the chapter, we review some of the most representative lines of research and pay special attention to the extent that the notion is embedded in a variety of seemingly unrelated theories and approaches. Is it possible that a serendipitous arrival of insights is merely the final step of a subconscious process of searching for missing links?
